Subject: [Rocky]Westgarth's future?
Extract from Herald-Sun newspaper Thursday 16th May, 2001.
Cinema facing final curtain
By KATE JONES
ONE of Melbourne's oldest cinemas may close if it is not allowed to expand
from a single screen to a three-screen house.
Northcote's Westgarth Cinema is the latest independent cinema to face
possible closure because it is losing money with only one screen.
Managers Michael Protopapa and Michael Yiannoudes say the Darebin Council is
dragging its feet on an extension application they lodged 12 months ago.
"There's no future in single-screen cinemas," Mr Protopapa said. "We're in
limbo at the moment. It's in their hands."
Darebin Council will be deciding on the application midway through the year,
but could not provide a date.
Mr Protopapa said the decision needed to be made immediately because
management could not sustain the losses.
He said if the plan was rejected by the council, the 81-year-old building
would be closed.
"If it's a no, there's nothing we can do about it," Mr Protopapa said.
"It would probably be turned into a warehouse."
The $1.5 million extension plan involves three new screens added on to a
neighbouring site.
Previous community meetings revealed some residents had objected to the
extension because of limited parking.
Independent operators say they must have more than one screen to stay
competitive in an industry dominated by multiplex movie houses.

Hiya
The rehearsal happened: myself, Adrian, Jess, Drew, Jade and Brian.
Some suggestions came out of it were, it would be good if:
1. Cast members supported Blues (first Friday of the month) to repay =
Blues' support for us
2. We had a rehearsal prior to Hush Now of Timewarp for those going.
3. People in the upstairs area at Westgarth before the show remembered =
to keep voices down (the noise can disturb patrons still watching the =
previous film). Also, the upstairs area is really for cast, trannies =
and helpers only -- there is a lot of personal gear up there.
4. Trannies were actively given some direction about what they will be =
doing before the show itself. (Zilla, are you happy to take charge of =
this?)
5. People think about ideas for the dinner scene. The teddy bears =
picnic was fun for cast but did not really work for the audience. Jess =
has a large Kermit hand puppet to replace Lamb Chop with. A rehearsal =
of the dinner scene before the next Rocky show would be good.
Jess is going to sound out Village about possibly also doing a show with =
them.
Brian is happy to hand out flyers in Smith St. I am happy to do a run =
to the next Abyss (which is the night before the next show).
Drew has updated the website. He is putting photos up on an unlinked =

Is everyone still going to Hush who said they would? Django, can you

Yes, there seems to always be lots of people that I don't know around and I

Sorry about not turning up on Sunday, chaps - but I had not only a mother's
birthday, but another rehearsal on the same day. Turns out a show I'm doing
has rehearsals every Sunday now.
I've organised with my TAFE campus manager to put up Rocky (and Blues, but
you won't want to know that.. ;) ) fliers about the place. Hopefully the
turnup may increase a little more, then! Maybe Mike and Mike could be
convinced that Westgarth has life as a cult movie place..
Allan.

Subject: [Rocky]Um...
Okay. Um. How to go about this -
Well. I'll just come out with it, I guess.
I'm quitting the cast.
I've had heaps of fun in the few performances I've done, but now I work as
well as do uni, my amount of time has progressively lessened and my stress
levels greatened. (Not a word. But oh well.) Admittedly, I am also doing a
host of other extra-curricular activities, like the student magazine and the
television production club - but those things are possibly preparing me for
a possible career. I'm getting valuable experience from them. Rocky gives me
fannish satisfaction, but frankly not much else.
I don't mean any disrespect to Rocky as an institution or the people who are
a part of it, but... look, something just has to go at this point. It's a
question of priorities. And I'm sorry it has to be Rocky, but hey, it has to
be something.
Of course, I could just fail to turn up to rehearsals and then come to shows
expecting to take part - but I would not do that to you guys. I respect you
and the show too much, and I'd rather be an audience member than be an
uncommitted cast member.
I fully intend to come to the actual shows, but I'll just come along as
audience rather than as cast. So don't think you won't be seeing any more of
me!
I'll be there.
So, yes, this is a stress-lessening measure. I just wanted to say, good luck
with the shows, I'll be there watching you, and thanks for giving me some
great times as part of the cast.
Um, yeah.

Warp?
About 9:30ish? That gives up time to fart arse around and do a rehearsal
and then get organised to get to the club. In that case we shouldn't have
to try very hard to organise lifts to the club because we'll all be here.
How many cars do we have?
And can we organise lifts home....

Hi
Sounds good Allan.
Alas, something has come up and I will not be able to make it to Hush Now
after all. Apologies, but then Rocky isn't in Time Warp anyway!
Cheers

Subject: [Rocky]October 2001 photos
Hi All,
We now have photos for the October 2001 performance on the site at
www.vurt.net/rocky/photos/october.html
At the end of the week I'll put up a link to the page for the public, sans any
photos you guys object to.
Some people wanted to put up a newer blurb for themselves...just send them to
me and I'll take care of it.
Regards,
Drew
Your friendly neighbourhood webmaster...
PS: That's the last of the photos I have besides the December show, which I'm
not sure about putting online at the moment....more contributions are welcome!
